Walz Proposes 160% Tax on New Car Tab Fees

Minnesotans were over-taxed to the tune of $17.5 billion and instead of putting that money back in your pocket, Gov. Walz actually wants to take more! The Governor’s proposal aims to put a 160% tax on your new car tabs.

Here is the breakdown of Walz’s tab fee restructure proposal:

The State expects $700 million in revenue from this new tax, again at a time when there is almost an $18 billion budget surplus.

Center of the American Experiment breaks it down:

“Under Walz’ proposal, the tax increases to 1.285 percent of 160 percent of the MSRP, or $626.80. You don’t have to be a math genius to calculate that the tax went up 60 percent. Year 2, the tax is on 100 percent of MSRP. Year three, on 90 percent, and so on. It’s as if you paid $48,000 for a $30,000 car!”

Minnesotans are already pinching their budgets in response to record-high inflation and instead of giving families needed relief, Gov. Walz wants to charge you an arm and a leg for car tabs. It’s a rather sneaky way to take even more of your money.
