Unsustainable Government Spending Spree

It’s budget year in Minnesota and Democrats are coming in HOT. They propose an increase in government spending that is so large, it, unfortunately, makes the state’s $17.5 billion budget surplus look like chump change.

Gov. Walz and the DFL’s general fund budget for the next two years amounts to a whopping $71.9 billion. The last budget in 2021 was $51.6 billion. Democrats are increasing government spending by over 20 billion dollars. The nerve!

Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson (R-Grand Forks) called out the proposed budget as a “runaway train of spending in Minnesota that Minnesota taxpayers will be paying for years and years to come.”

Is there no fiscal discipline? Minnesotans are having to tighten their belts in this economy but Democrats get to go on a spending spree. How can they honestly justify a nearly 40% increase in the state budget? When asked this question, DFL House Ways and Means Chair Liz Olson said, “With all the information we have in front of us we have a balanced budget and use what you see is what you get in this budget.”

Balanced they say! This rate of spending is completely unsustainable. How high do our taxes need to be to fund all of Gov. Walz and the DFL’s hopes and dreams?

As the legislative session continues the details of this budget will be built out, but one thing’s for certain, Minnesota Democrats are forgoing fiscal discipline and spending taxpayer money at an unsustainable rate.
