Union Fever and How We’re All Sick of It

Like many societal plagues in our society, the latest wave of unionizing came right from Hollywood. Celebrities wanted more money, and our celebrity-worshiping culture decided that striking must be the summer’s hottest new trend. Everyone’s doing it!

But this trend isn’t a bunch of clothing companies trying to make a quick buck. It’s political organizations that want to change how we do business in Minneapolis, a direct threat to many employers in our city.

It’s not summer anymore; it’s fall. We’re in an election season, and this unionization trend isn’t going away anytime soon if Democrats in Minneapolis have anything to do with it. Which they do. An activist group that represents the interests of illegal immigrant workers has taken up the Democrats’ dream of creating a labor standards board.

In short, they’re trying to create a super union.

Do supporters of this unelected board realize that its members won’t be decided by the people but by an appointed board that isn’t accountable to anyone? This from the same people who appointed a corrupt businesswoman to head the Department of Cannabis and also appointed the Metro Council that cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars because they’re wildly incompetent. Do you trust this government? Trust them with controlling your entire livelihood when you know they’ll never face consequences for overreach?

One of the things they’re pushing for is to bring rideshare drivers into this super union, completely forgetting that a few months ago when a ride-share ordinance was being floated in Minneapolis, Uber and Lyft threatened to pull their services from the entire state. That’s just one industry, not to mention restaurants and construction.

These businesses create jobs and goods and services for our community.

How do the people pushing this proposal, many of whom are affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America party, expect to have any workers to represent when all the businesses have closed their doors for good?

We can only imagine what corruption and chaos would be unleashed if this group got their way. It would be a disaster.
