Red States Spend Taxpayer Money Better than Blue States Study Finds

A new study finds that Republican-led states spend less taxpayer money for better government services than Democrat-led states.

WalletHub compared the quality and effectiveness of each state’s government-provided services across five categories: the economy, health, safety, education, infrastructure and pollution. These factors were then weighed against each state’s respective tax rates.

Who gets the best bang for their buck? WalletHub concluded that taxpayers living in Red states get a significantly higher return on their investment than those living in Blue states.

Here are the top 10 states for the best use of taxpayer money:

  1. New Hampshire

  2. Florida

  3. Alaska

  4. South Dakota

  5. Texas

  6. Missouri

  7. Virgina

  8. Geogia

  9. Ohio

  10. Wyoming

And the 10 worst states for return on taxpayer investment:

  1. New York

  2. Louisiana

  3. Oregon

  4. Vermont

  5. Connecticut

  6. Delaware

  7. Arkansas

  8. New Mexico

  9. Hawaii

  10. California

The findings of this study crush the argument that higher taxes pay to provide superior government services. Just look at California! They have the nation’s highest top-income tax rate (13.3%) and came in dead last on taxpayer return on investment.

Where is Minnesota? Our state ranked 37th. Overall government services rank high at number 2, while our taxes are some of the highest ranking 47th. With some of the highest taxes in the country, you’d expect Minnesota’s ranking to be much higher. But this expectation is not reality.
