Is Anyone Safe in Minnesota?

On the night of Friday, June 23 in Minneapolis, five young women were killed in a tragic collision while on their way to get ready for a friend’s wedding.

The incident was caused by Derrick John Thompson, the son of former state Rep. John Thompson, who served 2021-23 after losing his primary election in 2022.

A Minnesota trooper witnessed Thompson driving at speeds over 95 mph, and before he could pull Johnson over, he witnessed him run a red light and crash into another car, killing the five women inside. The funerals for the victims were held on Monday at the mosque the five attended regularly.

This was not his first hit-and-run. In 2018 Thompson ran a woman with a car in California. the victim now reportedly lives with life-altering injuries. He was sentenced to 8 years in prison but was released earlier this year after only serving 3 years. On the night of the incident, he was found to have a valid Minnesota driver’s license, something the state Department of Public Safety had trouble explaining.

The most aggravating part of all of this is how preventable this was. Thompson had only served part of his eight-year sentence for the hit-and-run in California. The circumstances of his release haven’t been made public, but whoever approved it has some questions to answer.

The Democrats’ stance on crime is soft, coddling the criminals and assuming everyone has a sympathetic reason for doing what they did. That is not the case here. There is no excuse for killing five people and severely injuring another. Derrick Thompson never should’ve been released, let alone have a valid Minnesota driving license. Now 5 young women’s lives are tragically cut short.
