Why We Need the Police
In the years since the beginning of the ‘defund the police’ movement we’ve seen entire police departments close down, college campuses cutting ties with law enforcement, and Minnesota Democrats doing everything they can to get rid of the police altogether. But that begs the question, what’s going to happen next? Let’s say that police departments are no more, are we safer for it?
This is going to sound very basic and elementary to most people, but those on the left cannot seem to grasp that police departments are there for a reason, and officers are not targets that Democrats can get political points by attacking. They are there to protect and serve the communities and make sure no harm comes to the people who live in them.
On September 5, 2023, Shivanthi Sathanandan, the state DFL’s second vice chair, was carjacked by a group of thugs and beaten in front of her children. It’s a horrific crime that unfortunately happens to many people. Sathanandan was previously very anti-police, swearing to dismantle the police herself. Since her attack, she’s completely changed her tune, expressing pro-police sentiments now that she’s experienced firsthand how horrible it is to be the victim of a violent crime.
Minnesota is seeing an epidemic of carjackings, a crime that is both financially and emotionally devastating to victims. Minnesota’s youth are taking to the streets and hurting innocent civilians going about their day as crimes among young people skyrocket. The DFL’s soft-on-crime stances spit in the face of people who have been hurt when there were no police around to protect them.
Those on the left have come up with ideas on what to replace the police with dumber than the last. What will a social worker do against an armed robber? Are mental health counselors supposed to take down fentanyl drug rings while they’re at it? It makes no sense how they could’ve come to the conclusions they have, it’s either malice or stupidity and neither bodes well for the population they’re supposed to be leading.
