Minnesota Republicans Find Victory as Voters Split Their Tickets

As the 2024 election closes Minnesota voters have sent a clear message: they are fed up with the direction the state is heading under the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party and are ready for a new leadership that will put the needs of families and communities first. This year, a growing trend of ticket-splitting has become a powerful tool for Minnesota Republicans. Ticket-splitting refers to when voters cast ballots for candidates from different parties in different races. This trend is helping Republicans gain ground in suburban and rural districts, which could reshape the state’s political future.

While Vice President Kamala Harris won Minnesota by just 4 points, GOP candidates running for the state legislature outperformed President-elect Donald Trump by an average of 3 points. This trend shows that voters are looking beyond party labels and choosing candidates who align with their priorities — like lowering taxes, addressing crime, and improving schools.

Minnesota's suburban areas, once solidly Republican, have become more blue in recent years. However, rising crime rates, high taxes, and progressive education policies are driving a shift back toward Republican candidates. Voters are increasingly looking for practical, common-sense solutions that prioritize safety, fiscal responsibility, and local control over schools — issues where Republicans are offering clear alternatives.

Republicans have also gained ground in rural Minnesota, where they continue to outperform Trump’s 2020 numbers. Rural voters, concerned about agriculture, government overreach, and economic policies, are rallying behind GOP candidates who promise to protect their way of life and bring fiscal discipline to state government.

With the Minnesota House now deadlocked at 67-67, Republicans have a real chance to flip the chamber in future elections. The trend of ticket-splitting — with voters supporting GOP candidates in state races despite voting for Biden in the presidential race — gives Republicans an opportunity to take control and reshape state policy. This could be a game-changer for Minnesota’s future.

With a focus on issues that matter most to Minnesotans, Republicans are positioning themselves as the party of practical solutions. Voters are increasingly rejecting the DFL’s progressive agenda and are turning to the GOP for answers. The momentum is on their side, now they need to capitalize on it.
