Gov. Walz, DFL Downplay Historic Rising Surplus
First, it was $7.7 billion, then $9.3 billion, then $17.6 billion, and now it’s $19 billion! Minnesota’s budget surplus keeps growing. Democrats are doing all they can to downplay the reality of our state’s historic surplus, by passing a bill to adjust it for inflation so that they can claim it “holds steady” at $17.5 billion.
The bill, HF35/SF46, passed on February 22, 2023, just in time to downplay the surplus before the next budget forecast. The intent behind Democrats' deceit is to push more than $2 billion in new taxes and fees with less pushback from Minnesotans. If they aren’t considering inflation when it comes to Minnesota families, why should they get to adjust the facts to fit their money-grabbing agenda?
The fact is that Minnesota has some of the highest tax rates in the country and Democrats want to raise them even higher. We’re talking California levels here. The $19 billion surplus is the result of over-taxation, and instead of giving it back, Gov. Walz and the DFL put it right back into the government budget to pay for their bloated bureaucracy.
If legislators gave ALL of the $19 billion surplus back to taxpayers, each person would get $6,500. Imagine that money in your bank account!
